Charleston County to Hold Public Comment Meeting on the Central Park Road and Riverland Drive Intersection Improvements Project
Public meeting regarding intersection improvements to be held in County Council Chambers on March 13.
Charleston County Government will host a public meeting on March 13 to gather public comments and discuss the recommendations moving forward in the Central Park Road and Riverland Drive Intersection Improvements Project. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. in County Council Chambers located at 4045 Bridge View Drive in North Charleston.
In October, Charleston County Transportation Development held an open house to display three alternatives for the project. After reviewing a number of factors, including public comments, Charleston County Transportation Development staff has narrowed down the alternatives to move forward with the project. The March 13 public meeting will include a brief presentation with more details on alternative one and three before taking public comments. Alternative one includes adding a traffic light at the intersection of Riverland Drive and Central Park Road. Alternative three includes adding two roundabouts joined together with a grass median instead of a traffic light.
Located in the Town of James Island, the intersection of Central Park Road and Riverland Drive has been identified as a critical road improvement project.Charleston County, the City of Charleston, the Town of James Island, and the SCDOT are working together to improve the intersection. The County is following the federal National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process to study various improvement alternatives that would accommodate the anticipated increase in traffic volumes and ultimately ease traffic congestion and improve all modes of transportation at this busy intersection.

Charleston County and City of Charleston Planning Departments will host a James Island public workshop and a Johns Island public workshop on the proposed Maybank Highway and Main Road Zoning District. The workshops will provide staff with public input regarding land use, zoning, safety and development standards along Maybank Highway and Main Road.
The February 19 workshop will focus on Maybank Highway on James Island and the February 28 workshop will focus on the Johns Island portion of Maybank Highway and will include Main Road.
The purpose of this collaborative planning effort is to create consistent land use, zoning, and development requirements between the County and City, and for the County to create a new Main Road Overlay Zoning District. Attendees will be encouraged to provide feedback through comment cards and a public comment session. These meetings are the second round of public workshops regarding the Maybank Highway and Main Road corridors, which will take place over the next year.
